UK residents can claim up to £283 for a PS5, along with other consoles, through a newly expanded recycling service.

While there’re plenty of options when it comes to reselling unwanted game consoles, either online or on the high street, few of them are particularly environmentally-friendly.

Virgin Media O2 has announced that its O2 Recycle service has expanded to include gaming systems including PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and Oculus VR headsets. Along with consoles, the service will also now accept unwanted MacBooks, smartphones, tablets, wearable technology, and earbuds.

As such, you can trade in your unwanted consoles for cash. Based on whether your console is fully working, you can receive up to £283 for a PlayStation 5, whereas a Nintendo Switch OLED model can net you up to £110. A base Switch, meanwhile, is worth up to £92.

As for Xbox consoles, the Xbox Series X can bag you up to £238, while the Xbox Series S is worth up to £80.

The service also accepts PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, but these, unsurprisingly, fetch a dramatically lower price (the PS3 Slim model with 250GB is only worth £3 apparently, while the original fridge model is worth nothing at all).

On the Oculus front, the Oculus Quest 2 headset with 256GB is worth the highest, at up to £65, while the Oculus Rift S is worth up to £60. You can check out further prices and details here.

According to O2 Recycle, all the unwanted technology you send will be repaired, refurbished, and resold or recycled, with zero parts going to a landfill.

The initiative is in response to new research which shows that 83% of gamers admit they have unwanted consoles they’re holding onto, with approximately 18 million consoles going unused across the UK.

According to the research conducted by Recycle Your Electricals, 75% of those asked in the survey said they would recycle their console if they were paid, while 51% would do so in order to help prevent e-waste and protect the planet.
