Zero-emission, offroad racing competition Extreme E has been positioned third in the 2024 Sustainable Championships Index™ (SChI™).

Standing alongside the ABB FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) Formula E World Championship, Formula One, and MotoGP, Extreme E has been recognised as one of the top performers in motorsports.

The SChI™ provides a yearly review of the environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance of motorsport championships across the globe. This edition included 106 two and four-wheel championships, with each series accessed using certain sustainability performance criteria.

The criteria included certifications; accreditations and awards; environmental performance; social performance; engagement and partnerships; and sustainability approach.

Ali Russel, Managing Director of Extreme E, said, “Environmental responsibility within motorsport is now very crucial, and as a series we will keep pushing the boundaries to deliver an exciting racing product, while still conscious of our sustainability efforts and raising awareness of the climate crisis.”

Extreme E was credited for its environmental reporting to offset emissions and claim carbon neutrality. The Desert X Prix, held last March (2023), announced a ‘successful showcase’ of ENOWA’s hydrogen mobile fuel cell system.

In August (2023), the FIA and Extreme E announced plans for Extreme H, the first hydrogen-powered off-road racing world championship.

Expected to have its inaugural season in 2025, the competition would join just seven other official FIA World Championships, showcasing a strong statement of intent from both Extreme E and the FIA for their growth towards hydrogen in the future.
