A huge pile of waste caught fire at a recycling centre in Rochford yesterday (January 4). Firefighters from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were called to tackle the blaze at Brickfields Way at 9.18pm, arriving from stations in Leigh, Rayleigh Weir and Southend.
The crews managed to extinguish the fire, the cause of which was reportedly accidental, on the surface before working with on-site staff, who used an excavator and a bulldozer, to move and turn over the material to make sure it was fully extinguished. They left the scene shortly after midnight.
Station Manager Howard Midwood said: “I’d like to praise site staff for taking swift action when they noticed the fire and our crews for their response. They stopped the fire from spreading to the entire warehouse; in the end only 3 or 4% of the waste was affected.”
